Women Environmental Programme (WEP) seeks a Media Relations/Web Developer
The principal responsibility of the Media Relations/Web Developer is to lead and work with the Executive Director in managing and developing media and public relations work in support of Women Environmental Programme public policy positions, advocacy and campaigns, and in networking with partners. Reporting directly to the Executive Director and work hand-in-hand with other staffs, you will be responsible for the strategic development of a media plan, and be able to execute on objectives at all levels. Build on corporate communications, as well as internal communications. To develop and manage research on WEP thematic areas, for documentation which includes the publication of newsletters and other publications, website updating and resource centre management. 


Key accountabilities

1. Independently undertake and manage research and policy advocacy work -
Research themes will include but not be limited to environment, peace and conflict resolution in the rural and urban contexts, governance and natural resource. This may include addressing issues of water and sanitation, human settlement in urban, women empowerment, youth empowerment, and climate change etc.

2. Manage Advocacy Projects - Manage rural and urban action research projects and foster their linkage with Women Environmental Programme projects.

3. Support in Policy Advocacy work - Lead on the policy advocacy works related to Women Environmental Programme and support the Director and other team members in other policy and advocacy work.

4. Responsible for documentation of best practices from within Women     Environmental Programme and from other sector - Lead in identifying best practices and document them as process notes or case studies and support initiatives in documentation by staff and partners

5. Responsible to produce and or edit organisational publications - Be responsible for producing monthly or quarterly Newsletter, and support in other publications, and ensure compliance to communications protocols

6. Maintain Women Environmental Programme Website - Regularly update the contents of the website in coordination with the Management and ensure all relevant WEP publications and documents are uploaded.

7.  Manage Media Engagement - Lead WEP media activities aimed at influencing opinion-makers and policy-makers, in coordination with Management and other teams. Engage various media to communicate WEP work practices and outcomes to different audiences.
8. Develop a media plan for WEP across all country and internationally. To execute the plan achieving frequent, timely and positive media coverage for WEP and its media programme across all available media and manage event.

9. To find innovative ways to broadcast/communicate WEP news, producing a design that will be attractive to the target user, has a logical navigation system and has all the features required - including RSS, SMS, Viral, Blogs, Podcasts, Forums and social networking sites – facebook, youtube etc.

10. To advise & assist spokespeople on presentations from a research perspective and
communication perspective.  To  review & assess existing methods of communications (written & electronic), volume of activity and the processes surrounding the development and approval of communications. Deciding on how images and other material will be digitally optimised and presented for the web testing the site for functionality in different browsers and at different resolutions, fixing errors.

11. Any other work as may be assigned to you from time to time.
Qualification: BSc/HND in Mass Communication, additional qualification in IT with particular reference to Web Developing, additional qualifications would be an added advantage. 2 years experience in media activities and must have written articles that have been published in Dailies; proof of this will be required during the interview process.
Must be a resident of Abuja and no accommodation would be provided.
The candidate is expected to have the following:

  • Should have a valid national driving license;
  • Must be willing to travel outside the State within short notice;
  • Must have good communication skills and be able to communicate effectively in English, good knowledge of Hausa language would be an added advantage
Women Environmental Programme (WEP) is a non-governmental, non-profit non-religious and voluntary organisation, was established in 1997 by a group of grassroots women in Nigeria. The organisation was formed with the major aim of addressing gender injustices on issues relating to environment, economic and social rights of women, children and youths in the society. WEP’s headquarters is situated in Abuja Nigeria, but is currently operating in the West Africa sub-region. It has a liaison office in Burkina Faso and three operational offices in Nigeria.
The vision and mission of WEP are from the perspective of being ‘entry points’ for the deepening of engagement with the various stakeholders and enlightenment of Nigerians on environmental, socio-economic and political issues within Nigeria and internationally. To facilitate this, WEP creates and sustains interest in environmental, socio-economic and political issues especially among women and youths in the country and across the globe. The Organisation’s Strategic Plan of Operations, which outlays the direction of WEP for the next five years (2008 – 2012), envisages 4 major programme projects viz. Environment, Governance, Peace and Conflict Resolution, and Natural Resources Development.
